The Observatory provides annual funding for projects, faculty, and students at Harvard: Research and Publishing Grants, and co-sponsorship of EMR Latino activities.
The Observatorio is an examination center for the Diplomas de Español como Lengua Extranjera (DELE).

The Instituto Cervantes has five centers in the U.S.—Albuquerque, Chicago, Los Angeles, New York, and the Observatorio at Harvard University, an extension in El Paso, and an aula in Seattle.

Following data from the 2023 Anuario del Instituto Cervantes, almost 600 million people in the world have Spanish as either their native or foreign language, and it is the 2nd most used language on Wikipedia, Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter.

The Observatory conducts analyses, studies, and reports concerning the social and linguistic situation of the Spanish language and its communities, and it is as a forum for analysis, exchange and debate among experts from Harvard University, from universities in the United States, Hispanic American countries and Spain, accepting as a basic principle the promotion of language coexistence and bilingualism.
