Although the teaching of Spanish for specific purposes is not new, the evolution of this type of course toward multidisciplinarity has been guided by the consensus that a complex and holistic understanding of the challenges students will face in the global workforce requires critical, textual, translingual, and transcultural skills that benefit from multidisciplinarity. The creation of the course “La ética de los negocios en América Latina” responds to this need and aims to promote critical and creative intelligence among Spanish students by exposing them to cultural, historical, and work-related realities in Spanish about Latin America. This talk, to be presented by Professor Adriana Gutiérrez (Harvard University), will address the implementation of this course based on pedagogical and creative practices that foster critical discussion about the history of multinational corporations in Latin America and the social issues that have arisen from them.

Adriana Gutiérrez designs, coordinates, and teaches courses in the Spanish program at the Department of Romance Languages and Literatures at Harvard University. She earned her Ph.D. from El Colegio de México. Her academic interests include the use of pedagogical methodologies that focus on literature and literacy to teach Spanish and Latin American literature and cultures in the classroom. She has also developed a curriculum for advanced courses of Spanish for specific purposes, such as "El español en la salud pública" and "La ética de los negocios en América Latina," designed as tools for the teaching of Spanish while promoting critical thinking and literature as a means toward interpretation, collaboration, and multidisciplinary learning.
