The Observatory of the Instituto Cervantes at Harvard, in collaboration with the university’s Department of Romance Languages and Literatures, is honored to welcome Barcelona singer-songwriter Joan Manuel Serrat, a paramount artist of the Spanish-language musical scene in the last half century. In this session, the renowned musician will hold a conversation with four Harvard professors – Aguirre-Oteiza, Herzog, Siskind and Vela – about his extensive artistic, professional, and personal career.

Considered one of the most relevant and internationally recognized icons of the Spanish-language musical scene, the famous singer-songwriter and composer Joan Manuel Serrat (Barcelona, 1943) has more than thirty studio albums, as well as compilations, collaborations with other important artists and live recordings, singing in both Spanish and Catalan. Furthermore, he has set to music the work of relevant Spanish-speaking poets and writers, such as Antonio Machado, Miguel Hernández, Federico García Lorca, Rafael Alberti, Mario Benedetti, and Pablo Neruda, with enormous success. In recognition of his extensive artistic career, he has received numerous prestigious awards and distinctions, such as the Latin Grammy “Person of the Year”, the Medalla de Oro [Golden Medal] of the city of Barcelona, or the “Caballero de las Artes y las Letras” award [Knight of the Arts and Letters] from France. Likewise, he has been made an Honorary Doctor by numerous universities throughout the Hispanic world, among them the Universidad Complutense de Madrid, the Universitat Pompeu Fabra, the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, and the Universidad Nacional de Córdoba in Argentina.
