Cervantes at Harvard

This presentation discusses a number of pragmatics studies on US Spanish, including using forms of address, performing speech acts, and expressing positive and negative politeness, among other aspects. The emphasis is on how the contact with English influences and re-shapes (in some cases) the way in which bilingual speakers use Spanish to perform certain speech acts in a polite way, or the choices they make among the forms of address they prefer to use for in-group vs. out-group interlocutors. Pragmatics is the less studied aspect of US Spanish so far, but this gap seems to start bridging in the past few years as linguists and language educators discover the potential of exploring this new field of research, in particular for teaching purposes. With the participation of María Luisa Parra (Harvard University) y Francisco Moreno-Fernández (Instituto Cervantes). Domnita Dumitrescu has been Professor of Spanish in California State University and is a Full Member of the North American Academy of the Spanish Language In Spanish
