Abstract:

This new issue of the Translators' Corner presents a short story by Argentine author Alfonsina Storni (1892-1938), who is mainly known for her poetry but also wrote prose, plays and newspaper articles. Many of these articles typically appeared in the women’s sections of newspapers and magazines and broke the mold of this genre by incorporating questions about women’s role in modern society. Published in May 1919 as part of her regular contribution to the Buenos Aires periodical La Nota, “Historia sintética de un traje tailleur”—“Synthetic History of a Tailored Suit” in this English translation—is a snapshot of Storni’s experimentation with tried and tested literary genres—in this case, the women’s column. It also echoes the social and gender questions that preoccupied her throughout her life and career, as well as her own life as a working single mother and rising literary star. [Adapted from the introduction written by the translators Anna White-Nockleby and Alina Lazar].
