Abstract: Spanish occupies a privileged space within the United Nations system. Nevertheless, its institutional representation remains inferior when compared with English and, to a lesser degree, with French. While Spanish’s reduced weight is principally due to political decisions, the current demand for the language both inside and outside the UN leads to thinking of a future where there is greater recognition of Spanish within the organization.
