Abstract: While George Ticknor’s scholarship on Spanish literature has recently attracted considerable attention, his 1832 lecture on the teaching of “living languages” had largely been ignored. This essay addresses this imbalance, emphasizing the extent to which Ticknor’s ideas about teaching drew upon those of his often forgotten assistant, Francis Sales, and his advocacy of the “natural method” of language instruction pioneered in the United States by Nicolas G. Dufief.

Keywords: George Ticknor, Francis Sales, Nicolas G. Dufief, Language Instruction, Spanish Language, Hispanism
