Over the last thirty years there has been a significant growth of Spanish cinema focused on the phenomenon of immigration to Spain, with more than 150 films, documentaries, shorts, short-feature films, and TV series on the subject, which, though not a genre itself, has already been identified as "migration cinema." This has led to numerous academic studies, interestingly more of which have been completed in the United States than in Spain (18 of the 31 doctoral dissertations identified came from U.S. institutions). The session will reflect on this topic in an effort to understand this interest for Spanish migration cinema in the United States.
F. Javier García Castaño is full professor of social anthropology at Universidad de Granada and director of its Migrations Institute. His research focuses on the processes of constructing difference as a way of managing diversity, paying special attention to migration and its representation in cinema. He has published with major academic editors, as well as in recognized journals like Dve Domovini, Two Homelands, Migraciones, and European Journal of Intercultural Studies. He has supervised a large number of doctoral dissertations and been a visiting professor at prestigious academic institutions in the U.S. and Europe.
