Carmen Laforet y los Estados Unidos | En conmemoración del centenario de la autora

With Roberta Johnson and Israel Rolón-Barada.

In this session two experts will trace the career and literary legacy of the Spanish writer Carmen Laforet, with special attention to her relationship with the United States. Following several invitations from American universities, the author first traveled to the country in 1965, which paved the way for new research into her life and work. The sense of freedom and independence she experienced during her trip, in addition to the appreciation of her masterpiece Nada in North American academia, were reflected in her letters, compiled in the epistolary volume Puedo contar contigo; correspondencia Carmen Laforet y Ramón J. Sender (Destino, 2003).

Roberta Johnson, Professor Emerita at the University of Kansas and Adjunct Professor in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese at UCLA, has authored several books on 20th and 21st century Spanish literature and thought, as well as approximately 100 articles on the topic. In recognition for her work as a hispanist, she has been awarded the Order of Isabel la Católica. Israel Rolón-Barada is a professor at Monmouth College and a researcher specialized in contemporary Spanish literature and culture. Co-author of Carmen Laforet’s biography and editor of three of her works, including the above epistolary volume, in 2001 he located Nada’s original manuscript. He received the Orden de los Descubridores from Sigma Delta Pi for furthering knowledge of Laforet.
