Desafíos en el diseño curricular de lenguas extranjeras en el nivel avanzado

With Richard Bueno Hudson and Hermes de la Torre

Inspired by the Plan Curricular del Instituto Cervantes, this session will start with an introduction to the objectives and contents to consider when designing teaching programs for higher-level students (C1 and C2, in the CEFR) of Spanish as a foreign language. The main part of the session will consist in a workshop illustrating how to include different components of the curriculum–grammar, vocabulary, discourse elements, and culture–in motivating and integrated ways, which will allow the continued development of linguistic competence in advanced students. Using movies as a jumping-off point and pedagogical tool, various methods for unit creation and lesson planning will be proposed.

Richard Bueno Hudson, who will deliver the introductory portion of the session, is Director of the Instituto Cervantes in New York and former Academic Director of the IC. He has extensive research and teaching experience in language acquisition, foreign language teaching, teacher training, the coordination of teaching teams and of international projects on language certification and digital education. Hermes de la Torre, who will lead the main portion, is the Academic Coordinator of the IC in New York, having previously held that position or taught in other ICs in multiple countries. He has been a coordinator and speaker in numerous teacher training programs for teaching Spanish as a foreign language and has been awarded the Cristóbal de Villalón International Award for his educational innovation in the Aula de Español como Lengua Extranjera by the Universidad de Valladolid.
