Spanish Series in the Age of Netflix: An American Perspective

Thursday November 12th (15:00 – 16:30 Boston / 21:00-22:30 Madrid): 

This lecture will examine three female-led series distributed by Netflix and produced in Spain, the streamer's European hub. It will pay particular attention to their reception in the US and formal changes that were made to adapt the series from a national free to air television system to a global streaming platform.

Paul Julian Smith is Distinguished Professor in the Latin American, Iberian, and Latino Cultures and Comparative Literature Programs at the Graduate Center in City University of New York. He was previously Professor of Spanish at the University of Cambridge, UK. He is the author of over 100 academic articles and 22 books, including Queer Mexico: Cinema and Television since 2000 (2017), Spanish and Latin American Television Drama: Genre and Format Translation (2018), and Multiplatform Media in Mexico: Growth and Change Since 2010 (2019).
