The Observatorio Cervantes at Harvard University is pleased to present a conversation with acclaimed Mexican writer Clyo Mendoza. Joining her will be Prof. María Luisa Parra and poet Sitalin Sanchez. 

This activity is organized in collaboration with Harvard University's Department of Romance Languages and Literatures, Faculty of Arts and Sciences. The event will take place on Monday, November 4, 2024, from 5:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at the Observatorio Cervantes at Harvard.

Born in Oaxaca, Mexico, in 1993, Clyo Mendoza is the author of the poetry collections Anamnesis (Cuadrivio, 2016) and Silencio (Almadía, 2023), the latter of which earned her the Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz International Poetry Prize in 2017. She has been awarded grants from Mexico's National Fund for Culture and the Arts in both poetry (Young Creators, 2015-2016) and novel writing (2020-2021, 2024-2025), as well as from the Antonio Gala Foundation in Córdoba, Spain (2018-2019), and Fundación Finestres in Barcelona (2023). 

Mendoza’s debut novel, Furia, was published in Spanish by Almadía (Mexico), Sigilo (Spain and Argentina), and Dum Dum (Bolivia). The novel has been translated into English (Seven Stories, 2024), Portuguese, and Italian, and has won the Amazon First Novel Award (2022) and the Javier Morote Prize. Furia has been hailed as “a Pedro Páramo of the 21st century.” 

 

María Luisa Parra is a professor and senior preceptor in the Department of Romance Languages and Literatures at Harvard University. She earned her BA from the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM) and completed her graduate and doctoral studies at El Colegio de México. Her areas of expertise are Spanish as a heritage language, second language acquisition and pedagogy, child language development and bilingualism, as well as Latino families, immigration, and education. In 2019, she was recognized by ARIST as one of the six Most Innovative Professors. 

Sitalin Sánchez is a Maseual ceremonial dancer from San Miguel Tzinacapan, Puebla, Mexico, and a poet. In 2020, she represented the National Poetry Slam League for Indigenous Languages. She holds an MTS degree from Harvard Divinity School and currently works as a research associate for the Moses Mesoamerican Archive and Research Project.
