The Observatorio del Instituto Cervantes at Harvard University will host a screening of the film Face love (2025), followed by a discussion with its director, screenwriter, and star, Gerald Fillmore. The film is a bilingual romantic comedy originally conceived as two parallel productions—one in Spanish and one in English—rather than a dubbed version. This unique approach preserves the natural flow of the performances, the precision of the humor, and its cultural authenticity. Based on the award-winning short film Hold for Applause, the movie follows two young people separated across continents during the pandemic, exploring love, linguistic identity, and the transnational experience through the lens of technology. The Spanish version features a cast with roots and careers spanning Spain, the U.S., the UK, Mexico, Argentina, Peru, Puerto Rico, Japan, and Equatorial Guinea, showcasing Spanish as a diverse, global language. Beyond its artistic merit, the film speaks to a significant social context: while approximately 13% of the U.S. population speaks Spanish at home—a figure that exceeds 20% in California—Spanish-language cinema accounts for only 3% to 5% of the total films produced annually in the country.

Gerald Fillmore is a Spanish-British-American filmmaker, screenwriter, producer, and actor based in Los Angeles. His career blends independent filmmaking and writing for film and television with acting in major international productions. He has worked with leading platforms and studios, including Netflix, Sony Pictures, Amazon Prime Video, Movistar Plus, Mediaset, Televisa, Disney+, HBO, and SkyShowtime, building a transnational career centered on bilingual production between Spain and the United States. His audiovisual work has been recognized at over 300 international festivals and has collectively earned more than 100 awards. As an actor, he is known for his performances in What Lucía Saw (Llegaron de noche, 2022), directed by Imanol Uribe, and Javier Fesser’s Unfortunate Stories (Historias lamentables, 2020). His screenwriting credits include the feature film Tequila Repasado (2023) and the Goya Award-nominated short film Hold for Applause (2020).
