Call for papers

The Instituto Cervantes Observatory at Harvard University, in collaboration with UNAM-Boston, invites researchers with an interest in the Spanish language and Hispanic cultures to submit proposals for our annual symposium. This call is addressed not only to faculty and scholars in academia (senior researchers, early-career PhDs, doctoral candidates, and advanced undergraduate students), but also to professionals working in libraries, museums, and other cultural industries whose work engages with the themes of the symposium.

The symposium welcomes contributions from a wide range of fields, including literature, history, art, translation, education, music, journalism, philosophy, science and politics, all within the context of the Spanish language in the United States. The program will also feature two keynote lectures delivered by distinguished scholars, to be announced shortly.

The symposium will be held in a hybrid format and will consist of two sessions, each including a keynote lecture, several 15-minute papers or organized panels, and a concluding discussion. Both sessions will be streamed via Zoom, and presenters may choose to participate either in person or online. The keynote lectures will be delivered by Professor Luis Girón-Negrón (William R. Kenan, Jr. Professor of Comparative Literature and of Romance Languages and Literatures, Harvard University) and Ana Elsa Pérez Martínez (Director of the Centro de Enseñanza para Extranjeros-CEPE, Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México).

Submissions must present original, unpublished work and may be delivered in either English or Spanish. Interested participants should send their proposals to:

observatorio.sympo@fas.harvard.edu

Proposals should include: the presenter’s name and institutional affiliation; the title of the paper or panel and in which language(s) it will be presented; an abstract of no more than 200 words (or 300 words for a panel proposal, including the names of all participants); and the preferred presentation format (in person or online).

The deadline for submissions is Wednesday, April 15. Applicants will be notified of the selection decisions by Friday, April 24.
