The process and intricacies of creating a symphonic concert, opera, or our beloved zarzuela, has always been a source of curiosity. The figure of the musical conductor, the cornerstone of all of the elements that are central to a zarzuela music production, awakens no less curiosity. From a musical point of view, the conductor is normally the only person aware of the total significance of a given work, and must know exactly where it is going in order to guide the music and properly plan the climatic moments of the score. In addition, he must know how to deal with people, which requires a certain level of psychology, diplomacy, tact, and organizational skills. Therefore, it is very enriching to know the creative and organic process of creating a zarzuela from within, from the perspective of the musical conductor or “teacher”, as he is also known.
José Sanchís is considered one of the most renowned Spanish conductors of his generation. He is currently Principal and Artistic Director of the Complutense University Symphonic Orchestra of Madrid, Artistic and Musical Director of the Chamber Cicle “Los Paseos Musicales” in the Royal Garden of Madrid, and guest conductor in different orchestras. He has conducted orchestras such as the Valencia Orchestra, the Navarra Symphony Orchestra, the Community of Madrid Orchestra, the Córdoba Orchestra, the National Youth Orchestra of Spain (JONDE), the Sophia Festival Orchestra (Bulgary), the Cidade de Pontevedra Philharmonic Orchestra and the Symphony Orchestra of the Superior Conservatory of Music of the Principality of Asturias among others.
