George Ticknor (1791-1871), his Contributions to Hispanism, and a Special Friendship

Estudios del Observatorio/Observatorio Studies. 058-02/2020EN. (Orig. and Trans.)

This study is dedicated to George Ticknor (1791-1871), a pioneer of Hispanism in the United States who laid the foundations for Harvard University’s modern languages program. Over the course of two articles, the study examines Ticknor’s intellectual, academic and pedagogical career—which culminated with the publication of his seminal History of Spanish Literature (1849)—, as well as his friendship with Thomas Jefferson, with whom Ticknor shared a passion for books and learning, for academic reform, as well as for Spanish letters and their introduction to American universities.
