Ernest Hemingway’s novel, For Whom the Bell Tolls, is a homage to Spanish writers. This talk will provide an overview of this presence of Spanish literature in this important work of contemporary American literature: in it, Hemingway alludes, for instance, to plays from Spain’s Golden Age, such as Lope de Vega’s Fuenteovejuna, while also expressing his solidarity with Rafael Alberti, the Spanish poet who was Director of the Alliance of Anti-Fascist Intellectuals for the Defense of Culture.

Douglas LaPrade has been a professor at the University of Texas Río Grande Valley since 1993. Previously he taught at the University of Barcelona for eight years. He has published books about Hemingway at the presses of the Universities of Salamanca and Valencia. He has received two Fulbright grants to complete his research in Spain.
