Cervantes at Harvard

For almost ten years now, James Fernandez and Luis Argeo have been interviewing descendants of Spanish immigrants who came to the US in the late nineteenth- and early-twentieth centuries. Whenever possible, they also scanned their family archives. Their goal is to create a vast on-line digital archive that will document the little-known history of the tens of thousands of Spaniards who settled in tight-knit enclaves all over the US, from Barre, Vermont to San Leandro, California; from Boise, Idaho to Tampa, Florida. James Fernandez propose to discuss this archival project, its major findings, and the implications of those findings for our understanding of the shared history of Spain and the United States. With the collaborarion of Luis Fernández Cifuentes. James Fernández is Professor of Spanish and Portuguese at New York University In collaboration with ACE - Spanish Cultural Association of Boston
